A Little Rebellion Now and Then is a Good Thing...?

Himself sent me an article from FoxNews:

A student at Hamline University in Minnesota has been suspended and ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation for advocating the carrying of legal concealed weapons on campus.

TownHall.com reports Troy Scheffler made the case in an e-mail to a school official that licensed gun owners could stop or prevent the kind of violence that struck Virginia Tech earlier this year. He pointed out that research has indicated the possibility of armed resistance discourages potential criminals. And he noted that many Virginia Tech students have said the massacre there would not have happened if the school had not banned concealed weapons.

But even though the school has a policy that guarantees students will be free to discuss all questions of interest and express their opinions openly, the dean of students says Scheffler's e-mail was deemed to be threatening. Scheffler was placed on interim suspension, which will only be lifted after he agrees to a psychological evaluation.

I think that this guy is an idiot. Not because arming oneself should be illegal, but because he opened his mouth without preparation. He should have been aware, despite being an idealistic student, that freedom of speech is limited, at best. It simply does not exist in the manner that we imagine it does, and it never did.

It is a hazy subject, freedom of speech. It can be called mentally unbalanced... or treason. If one is going to live in a developed country, one has to realize that they're going to have to follow the established rules - not laws, but rules. No country actually allows true freedom of speech, because the current ruling body wants to carry on being the ruling body.

We're all oh-so-proud of our so-called freedoms, but it reality, it just means we can say that we don't like what to government is going - to actually say we mean to do anything about it, well, that's treason.

My point returns to this: dude should have known better, and kept his mouth shut until he had twenty or thirty people saying the same thing, and then been ready to recruit more. Then they could have approached the school official. Just opening one's mouth gets nothing done - a revolution is hard work, and if one can't take one's cue from history, then one doesn't deserve change.
